Sicily Island, a Largest Island in Mediterranean sea

Talking about Mediterranean Sea region is not separated from popularity of Italy. Most of Italy areas are directly bordered with Mediterranean Sea, like Sicily Island and Sardinia Island.

A shape of Italy often described like a foot kicking the ball and often be a reason why this country have many soccer players. Sicily Island is located in southern Italy, while a little apart and leads into Mediterranean Sea is Sardinia Island.


Sicily’s name is usually directly related to a mafia groups. Sicily Island is known as a birthplace of Mafia, Cosa Nostra who they are also called to distinguish them from other mafia groups. Most people said, mafia has a big control on economic and political of this largest island in Mediterranean Sea.

Not only popular with its Sicilian mafia, Sicily Island is a major point of trade routes in Mediterranean route in the past. Like most areas of trade routes, Sicily Island has a rich culture and art, cuisine, architecture, and language.

Sicily was conquered by Greece in 750 BC and later by the Romans who made Sicily a part of its territory for 700 years. Sicily also had fallen into hands of the Byzantine Empire and Arab, until finally united with Italy.

No wonder if there are many relics of high historical value that can be encountered. Syracuse as an example is renowned as a ancient city. This 2700-year-old city has a rich in relics of the Greek period, such as the amphitheatre, architecture, culture, and famous as the birthplace of Archimedes.

Not only that, Mt Etna is a highest volcano in Europe and still active, also found on Sicily Island.

The island of Sicily is not a large island, but variety of beauties from mountains, beaches, history and culture, make this island is so interesting for your next island travel.
